Playing Like a Champion
The beatings of the drums are in rhythm with the tapping of my foot.
The metal seats vibrate as I choose each note carefully as I play along.
My fingers are firm as I move each one quickly to keep up with the drum major.
The beautiful sparkling stars are blinded by the gigantic head revealing our music.

Beyond us are strong sturdy football players acting as if they are running from death itself
racing to reach the finish line with a leather oval shape ball.
People including our own jump up and shriek with excitement that our team made a touchdown.

Within minutes, we stand on the sideline frozen by fear and excitement,
ready to walk on the empty field in front of us.
Four whistles and we move with the tapping of the drums.
During Announcements we gather our thoughts
remembering what we were taught during the dark morning hours.
Moving as one we now hit each step with confidence.
We cover for each other on the field, adjusting not to leave a single person out, working as one.
As we march off the field people clap and cheer for a job well done.
And when we see those smiles on our band director's face,
we know then, at that moment, we play like champions.
